Here's What We Think
This is the page for expressing your thoughts
about
Stockton Folk Dance Camp or Folk Dancing in General.
The ideas and opinions expressed here are
that of the post's author
and not that of Folkdance Camp or the camp committee.
I will post any reasonable post, article, or
comment as space and time allows. Unreasonable post may be put up for
the fun of it. Do not send it, if you don't want your name attached.

Video for International folk Dance
I have started to put together with Loui Tucker’s editorial
help the “commercial” for International Folk Dancing. I put together
the first cut on May 14, 2008 and emailed it to Loui for her commit. As
of writing of this blog, we are on cut 7, by the time of the articles
publication who knows.
The commercial is available for use in a number of different
formats:
• The lower resolution email version that is suitable to email
to your friends.
Right click here to download video.
• The Brightcove and You Tube versions which are available for
use on your web sites.
The latest commercial can be seen on
http://internationalfolkdance.blogspot.com/ . This site is also the
current clearing house site for folk dance links.
Some of the earlier videos can be seen on my YouTube Site.
http://www.youtube.com/user/royisdancing .
The commercial has some fun clips of folk dancing and a web
site contact at the end. Eventual as this comes together we hope to
have a very simple web address. Currently, I am using the
http://internationalfolkdance.blogspot.com/ page.
The commercial is there for anyone to use to promote folk
dancing. If you need help on how to post it to you web page contact me,
Roy Butler at click for email.
If you have video that you have the rights to and would like
me to post to the video list contact me. If you want to post you on
video to Brightcove or You Tube, you can also contact me.
International
Folk Dance Video List.
The video list page is the collection of my folk dance videos in a
visual folk dance video list at
http://my.starstream.net/patroy/videodancelist.htm .
This web site represents my ongoing project of video recording folk
dances and posting the dances to the web.
The videos are listed on the site in two formats.
- On the top of the page are two picture strips that are
alphabetical lists of the international folk dances available on the SDOW Video
Channel and SIFDAC
Video Channel. Mousing over a picture in the strip will bring up the
dance name. Clicking on it will load the video player page and start
the video. Use the arrows at the bottom of each strip to advance the
strip to see more videos. Currently, the SDOW strip
has twelve pages of videos and the SIFDAC Strip has 34, as I collect more
dances the strips will expand.
- Below the video strips is an alphabetical list of the
dances I have collected. Clicking on the dance name will bring up a
video of the dance. If I have found a dance note source on the internet for
the dance then link to the dance description is also listed. Each dance
is listed only once even though I may have multiple videos of a dance
in the collection. Check the picture strips to see all of the videos.
The videos on the list are there for all folk dancers to use.
If you need more than a simple link that you can steal from the video
players address, then email me Roy.
Milen has posted the a down loadable for a small
fee MP3 file of him and Sara playing Vals60 and the score to Vals
60 to his web site.

The videos that we have posted to the web site are to give a
window of what it is like to go to Folk Dance Camp. If you would
like videos for reviewing the dance, remember that besides the camp DVD
which I hope you bought, a number of the teachers have produced
good quality DVDs for dance review.
Cristian
& Sonia have produced a great DVD of dances from their first
two CDs. Te aven Baxtale, Joc de doi & Dana along with other
favorites can be found on it. Contact Cristian &
Sonia for details on their DVD and other offerings. This is a
great DVD and a must for any Romanian fanatic.
Yves Moreau has
also produced a series of exultant Bulgarian DVDs. Contact
Yves for videos
Other teachers have also produced DVDs contact them by email
for more information.
Well FDC 2007 is over; I hope a good time was had by
all. I know I had a great time, even though I don't want to
roll another table for a while. Thanks to all the Scholarship
people who helped with that especially those who showed up for most
moves. We could not do it without you. Thank you to food
service for letting us use their space and working with us. Thank you
to the teachers for understanding just how critical it was to meet the
schedule so food services could feed everyone.
I've been getting many commits on how much everyone loves the
video on the web site. The majority of the video was shot by
Steve Turner the Camp videographer. I shot a little that I
will put up soon, but it was to much work on top of everything I do,
and besides there is supposed to be only one videographer at camp and
that is Steve. Steve and I will be working to get up more video
trough the year so keep checking the web page.
If you need a Folk Dance Video fix check out my video page at
International
Folk Dance Video Exchange or my dance video list at
Social Dances of The World.
As you can see from the front page we already have a great
line up for next year, and with the excitement generated this year camp
is already half full, so what are you waiting for?
Tony (the guy with the big truck) married Lynn (his favorite
rigger) on June 2, 2007. Being hard core folk dancers, they
had a folk dance themed wedding. Pictures and video of it can be seen
here
http://my.starstream.net:80/patroy/Lynn_Tonys_Wedding.html.
More pictures by Gypsy Flores can
be found here.

The wedding ceremony was heartfelt and moving. The party
afterwards was great fun. Best of luck to two wonderful people and
dancers. Your love is important to us all.

I have started a video channel for Folk Dance Camp. It
can be found here Stockton
Folk Dance Camp Channel. I have started the channel with some video
I took in 1988, the last year that private video cameras were
allowed at camp. In the future I will be adding more video from Steve
the official camp videographer.
This is a continuation of my project to bring folk dance
videos to the web. Check my master video channels page for more
video International
Folk Dance Video Exchange. If you have some video you would like to
share you can do it there. Roy
Camp is full! If you haven't already
registered get on the waiting list. Those who have registered but
find they can't go, please inform Jan Wright as soon as you
can. That way someone on the waiting list can go to camp.
Well as can be seen from the front page camp is
filling up fast. Make sure you reserve a place now. If you don't
see your favorite teacher on the main teachers list stay tuned. A
number of other great teachers will be making appearances as guest of
camp.
What can I say about the 2006 camp. Even with
all the extra work it was a great camp, Great teachers, a lot of
useable dances and great fun.
The 2007 camp should be even better see you
there.

Camp is developing a newsletter about camp to be
distributed by email. Articles from the news letter can be seen on the
site at this page Camp Newsletter .
Some of these articles have gotten me to think
about what camp means to me.
I am at my happiest at camp. Those two
weeks a summer are Prozac for my soul.
Camp is a village or a tribe, that comes
together for two weeks a year.
Some of my best friends in life, I mainly only
see at camp. Sure, I may seen them in passing at Statewide or
some other festival, but only at camp does the true intensity of the
relationship show it self. Even with people I see weekly at folk
dance events, camp brings us closer.
We have a new section on the web site (letters from camp) where we reprint
Jan's letters to the campers for those who don't always get their mail.
For those who missed the Camellia Festival, you
missed a great party. Richard and Yves both delivered great
workshops. Chubritza, with their great danceable high leave of
musicianship played for two wonderful parties.
Sorry about the long time between updates but I
have been busy. If you have commits or suggestions please email them.
This blog is not just a place for my opinions, but a place for your
views about camp.

Folk Dancing has Lost One of its Greats.
Dick
Crum has passed away
Good Morning, friends. It is just before
8.00 am in Minneapolis & St Paul, Minnesota, in the USA. I
just got word from a local folk dancer who is close to his family that
Dick Crum has died. We don't yet know what caused his death, but
according to the folk dancer, who heard from Dick's sister in St Paul
this morning, Dick had been quite ill the past week or so but had not
been to a doctor. Friends and family became worried when they
hadn't heard from him and couldn't reach him by phone.
I'm sure more news will become available. His body will be
cremated and ashes brought back home to St Paul. There will be a
memorial service here in the Twin Cities (his birthplace and home) at
some point. I or someone here will keep you posted as we get
information to share.
There are so many wonderful, personable, creative, and talented dance
teachers, researchers, and dancers in the world, but Dick Crum was THE
most precious treasure of them all. May his soul rest in peace,
knowing how much he was loved and appreciated all over the world.

We have met the challenge. Thanks to some
generous donations we have exceeded the $50,000 donation mark to
receive the matching funds. These moneys will go into the Jack McKay Endowment, which will be controlled by
camp directly and not the university. Thank you for you generosity. A
donors list will be posted on the site, when it becomes
evadible. We do not need to stop here, any donations
to the Jack McKay Endowment or the Scholarship fund will be greatly
appreciated.
So let's start this off.
I am guilty of heresy. How may of you are tired
of the round dance mentality? How may of you have poked fun at the
choreographed waltz, polka or tangos, while doing your third or fourth
choreographed pravo for the night?
I think its time that the teachers, who teach
dances from counties that have a living folk dance tradition, start to
teach the dances as they are done in a social situation. In other
words, teach the basic step used by the average dancer, then the rules
for improvisation on top of that step. Do we need to learn yet
another stage choreography. Roy Butler
