CAMP LOCATION

Stockton is located in the middle of the central valley of California.  The climate is sometimes hot (dry heat—not humid) during the days with usually cooler breezes in the evenings.  The University of the Pacific (UOP), where the dance camp was founded by Lawton Harris in 1948, is one of the oldest universities in the state of California.  It is approximately 90 miles east of San Francisco and 50 miles south of Sacramento.  If you arrive in Stockton by bus or train we can provide a shuttle to Camp if you let us know of your projected arrival time.  At the present time Stockton has no passenger airline service.

LIVING QUARTERS

All Campers will be housed in student residence halls on the University of Pacific campus.  A map will be provided upon arrival showing the location of the dining hall and dance facilities.  All rooms are air-conditioned.  The air-conditioning is centrally controlled by the university and has some down times during the day and early a.m. hours to conserve energy.

We usually house two people to a room unless you request a private room ($75.00 extra). A blanket & pillow will always be provided. For an additional $10.00 UOP will supply bed linens, and two towels.  Otherwise, please plan to bring your own sheets and towels.  Some campers like to bring a mattress pad.   Wash cloths are not provided.  While the rooms were recently remodeled and refurnished, we note that most rooms do not have mirrors—you may want to bring a small one if you can.  A small fan is also helpful.

There is only one centrally located bathroom on each floor of the dormitories we are presently using.  First and third floor bathrooms are designated for women, the second floor bathroom is for men.  Since we accommodate many couples at Camp, this means that one of the partners must go either up or down the stairs to use the bathroom facilities.

 PLEASE NOTE:

YOUR ROOM ACCOMMODATIONS INCLUDE SATURDAY NIGHT AT THE END OF YOUR WEEK.  CHECKOUT TIMES ARE ON SUNDAY MORNING.

LAUNDRY FACILITIES

Washers and dryers are located in each dorm.  You will need to bring your own soap, or you may purchase some at the campus store.  All washers and dryers use cards which may be obtained near the dining hall.  Cost is $1.00 per wash load, 50 cents to dry.

MEALS

All regular meals are served in a campus dining hall.  The Saturday banquets are sometimes held outside on a nearby lawn.  The fees you pay for Camp will cover breakfast, lunch, and dinner Monday through Saturday.  .    Meals on Sundays are NOT included, but the dining hall will be open if you would like to purchase a meal.  Special dietary needs can be met by the food service program.  Vegetarian meals are available at all times.  There are no cooking facilities in the dorm rooms.  A mid-morning break (fruit, juice, coffee) is provided by Camp each day.

SHOPPING

You will find a book store and a small grocery store on campus which are only open during summer school hours.  A full size grocery store is about ½ mile from the campus and can easily be reached on foot.  Additional stores of all types are located north of the campus on Pacific Avenue, and are best reached by car.  You can also shop for folk-related items (including music and costumes) right on campus near our residence hall.  Our folk shop dealers come to Camp especially prepared with many beautiful items for your selection.

DANCE HALLS

All dance rooms are air-conditioned, and all floors are wood.

WHAT TO WEAR

Plenty of light weight clothing works best for most dancers for the class sessions during the day.  Sweaters are sometimes needed for evenings when walking outside.  Many people bring costumes for picture night.  It is a good idea to bring extra, comfortable shoes along.  Some clothes hangers are available at registration.  You may also want to bring along your swimsuit.  The UOP Olympic size pool is open daily at no cost to you.  On one evening, a special “hat” dance will be performed by all campers who have a unique or unusual hat to wear.  Bring your special hat and join in this event!

REGISTRATION/CHECK-IN

Registration starts at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday.  If you arrive after 5:00 p.m. you will need to register at the Camp office.  The office staff will be taking a dinner break from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., so the office will be closed during that time.  You will receive your room assignments, key cards, badge, syllabus, daily schedule, etc., when you register.  Tours of campus and dance rooms will be conducted during Sunday afternoon from 2:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. as needed.

NEW CAMPER ORIENTATION

All new campers will be asked to attend an informal orientation and get acquainted party prior to the opening party.  You will have a chance to meet the Camp director at that time, and an opportunity to ask those last minute questions about Camp activities.  Jerry Helt will help you get to know each other.  This session will be held from 7:00 to 7:40 p.m.

OPENING PARTY

The opening party is held each Sunday evening starting at 8:00 p.m.  Director Bruce Mitchell will cover last minute details concerning Camp, and introductions of our guest teachers and staff members will take place at that time.  Each teacher will introduce a dance during the evening.  This is a relaxed time with a lot of mixers thrown in and live music provided.  It’s another good opportunity to get to know each other.

DAILY SCHEDULE

Four class periods take place in the morning. You will have three or four choices each period. Following lunch, an assembly is held in one of the dance rooms. A different teacher makes a special presentation each day. Special workshops may be scheduled in the afternoon. On Tuesday (picture night) and Friday evenings an informal lawn party takes place. One more class period (again three choices) is held in the evening. Our nightly review session (Once Over Lightly) follows the last class. An after party is featured each evening which includes all request dancing with emphasis on the new dances of Camp. As part of the after party, the “Hole in the Wall” will be open providing you with a great opportunity to relax a little and have some nice conversation and light refreshment--perhaps giving you the energy to dance until…??

SCHOLARSHIP AUCTION

Each Wednesday evening following dinner, Jerry Helt becomes our auctioneer.  Donated gifts, costumes, and services will go to the highest bidder.  Jerry helps to make this event fun for all.  All the proceeds from this activity help to support the live music program at Folk Dance Camp.

RUMMAGE SALE/SILENT AUCTION

Another source of funds for the scholarship program is our rummage sale which will be held daily in the area where the dealers are, during their open hours.  We encourage all campers to bring and donate folk related materials such as costumes, books, records, etc.  Some of the more valuable items are put into the silent auction which will be held one night during the week.  All funds will help others enjoy a wonderful week at Folk Dance Camp.

CAMP OFFICE

Signs posted about campus will direct you to the Camp office and to registration.  (Directions and a map will also be included in the Camper letter you will receive a few weeks before Camp begins.)  Jan Wright is the Camp secretary.  She will be on campus beginning July 10th.  The office phone number will be 209-946-2295.  Incoming mail can be picked up there during your stay.  You may also leave outgoing mail with us.

Lost and found articles are brought to the office.  We ask that you make personal outgoing phone calls from either your own cell phone or the pay phones located in the University Center.

Infirmary facilities are available on campus weekdays only.  Please check with the office if you have need of this service.

CAMP EVALUATION

We continue to strive to improve Camp each year.  Immediate concerns should be brought to the Camp office.  You will be asked to complete a general evaluation form before you leave.  Your thoughts and ideas are always appreciated, and yes, ALL evaluations are read.

MISCELLANEOUS

Additional items to consider bringing along are an alarm clock, a clip-on bed/reading light, flashlight, a binder for your syllabus.  There is a talent show on Saturday.  Bring your talent with you and share it with other campers.  There will be opportunities to take pictures, so bring your camera.  Please note that video taping is NOT allowed in the classrooms.  You may purchase the official Camp video while you are here, with delivery approximately 6 to 8 weeks following the end of Camp.

Every evening at Camp our daily newsletter, Footnotes, will be available to give you important information not found elsewhere, such as schedule changes, announcements, reminders, etc.

The UOP library has one section just for dance research.  This includes books, magazines, records, and audio and video tapes.  This is a very unique feature of Camp and one that is growing in popularity.  The library is open during regular campus hours.

We probably haven’t answered all of your questions, but hopefully these tips will give you an insight as to what CAMP is all about.  A Camper Letter, repeating some of the above, but including last minute information will be mailed to you early in July.

We are looking forward to meeting you this summer!
